Botanica Ancient Chinese Massage Cupping Therapy

Cupping MassageClearwater, FL (August 29, 2014) – Botanica Day Spa recently announced the addition of massage cupping to their full spa services menu. The technique, based on ancient traditional Chinese medicine, uses small glass cups to create a suctioning of tissue that is lifted up into the cup at a comfortable but effective pressure. The cups are then moved in a gliding motion across the skin to engage more tissue. In contrast, traditional massage primarily uses compression techniques which press down into the tissue. The combination of both modalities opens up a fuller spectrum of techniques with which the therapist can aid the body in achieving greater levels of healing.

Botanica’s licensed massage therapists conduct an in-person consultation with the client prior to the treatment to discuss problematic areas as well as any potential contraindications. The therapist may focus the cupping massage in a variety or combination of different trouble spots including the back, neck, shoulders, stomach, legs and even the face. The technique is praised for itshealth and wellness benefits, targeting:

  •     Lymphatic drainage
  •     Improved circulation
  •     Reduced inflammation
  •     Release of deep tissue stiffness
  •     Respiratory clearing
  •     Reduced visibility of cellulite

A randomized controlled trial conducted in 2012, published in the online journal PLoS One, analyzed the use of cupping massage in 61 patients with neck pain over a 12-week period. After the period of treatment, patients showed significant decreases in pain as well as favorable improvements of inner peace and vitality.

I feel like it achieved the same results if not better than a deep tissue massage, but in a quarter of the time,” said Christine Wheaton, a long-time client of Botanica’s. “I felt loose after the cupping massage and had range in my shoulders and neck that I didn’t have before. I loved it.”

Botanica owner and aesthetician Gen Obolensky said “It has definitely been one of our more popular services. Clients generally come in very curious about it—maybe they saw a picture on our Facebook page or a friend told them about it, and they leave feeling really pleased with the results.”

Obolensky also noted that cupping massage can be enjoyable for those who prefer intense pressure during a massage, but the pressure is scalable for those who may be more sensitive and prefer a lighter touch, “Our therapists specializing in cupping techniques provide a fully individualized, unique experience specific to your preferences and areas you wish to target with the treatment.”
