DIY Beauty: Why You Shouldn’t Rush Into It

We’re in the age of do-it-yourself projects thanks to sites like Pinterest and YouTube, where you can find endless tutorials on how to make anything and everything you can imagine. (Which we agree, is totally awesome and can be incredibly useful!) DIY beauty treatments are one of the most popular items on those sites because they allow you to easily pamper yourself at home while saving money on spa or salon treatments.

Sounds perfect, right? Think again.

Many of these DIY treatments pride themselves on only using ingredients that you already have lying around your house; therefore, you may be putting your skin at risk of becoming damaged by using cheap, low-quality ingredients or adding wrong ingredients together that could cause an adverse effect. Here are some things you need to know about DIY beauty treatments to ensure your skin stays safe and healthy before you take the leap into creating your own face masks, moisturizers, and oils.

What Classifies an Unsafe Ingredient for DIY Beauty?

Scrubs, cleansers, and facial masks are some of the top DIY beauty treatments that are sought after by women. It can be very appealing to want to try out a facial product that uses only natural ingredients like lemons, sugar, salt, and even oatmeal. It seems pretty straightforward, after all. However, even those natural ingredients can harm your skin if you’re using them improperly. The ease and availability of creating a DIY mask can allude to the damage it may cause to your skin.

Fruit acids, like the ones found in lemons, can actually burn your skin when used incorrectly. Scrubbing your skin using oatmeal, table sugar, or salt probably seems like a great way to naturally exfoliate your skin, but the sharp edges of those ingredients can scratch the surface of your skin and worsen scars, dark spots, and other skin problems you may have that you wanted to make less noticeable. It can also lead to skin irritation and redness, which is the opposite result you would be looking for.

Even attempting to “steam” your face using a pot of boiling water can cause serious harm to your skin! One of the worst DIY treatments out there we found suggested using kitty litter! It’s filled with chemicals and very cheap fragrance, not to mention other ingredients that are so poorly produced that we cringe at the thought of someone using it on their face. Therefore, please take caution before you jump on board with DIY skin care.

Stay with a Professional for Your Skin’s Health

It’s totally understandable wanting to cut costs or find ways to pamper yourself on the less expensive end, but you should never, ever jeopardize the health of your skin simply to save on money. Botanica Day Spa only uses quality ingredients that are pH balanced and modified to ensure that your skin cells properly accept the ingredients of all of our facial treatments! Our quality ingredients are able to penetrate the skin more deeply than any DIY products and have been a number one brand of skin care for decades.

Botanica Day Spa Services

You should never try to correct skin issues like acne, pigmentation, or wrinkles yourself at home. Except for the daily maintenance of your normal skin care routine (ie washing your face, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream and bought skin care masks). Whatever kitchen ingredients you might be tempted to use will never be as effective as the combination of an appropriate skin care regimen and regular treatments with a licensed skincare expert.

You’ll be saving your skin (and money) in the long run if you trust your skin to a Botanica expert! Call us today at 727-441-1711 to book your professional facial and consult with us before you try any DIY skin care treatments.
