How The Environment is Affecting Your Skin

The environment seems to be a big issue lately; companies and communities are constantly looking for ways to “go green” and help promote healthier, happy environments across the world so that the Earth can continue to thrive and nourish people and animals alike. What may not be on your mind is the fact that there are several environmental elements that could be affecting the health of your skin. Both natural and man-made environmental factors have been linked to several different skin conditions.  Here is what you need to know about the environment you live in and how you can protect your skin.

3 Environmental Factors That Affect Your Skin

•    Environmental irritants can be broken into three main categories: physical, chemical, and biological. Physical factors include sunlight, heat, and cold. Living in hot, humid climates can cause skin irritation, especially if you are prone to perspiring. Sweat can become trapped in your skin, causing blisters or heat rash. However, living in cold climates with low humidity can lead to such issues as dry skin and dandruff.

•    Pollutants in the water and air, alcohol, car exhaust, and second hand smoke are all considered chemical irritants. Chemicals such as oil and tar can clog pores, triggering acne to develop. Some chemicals can even lead to burns, hair loss, and changes in pigmentation.

•    Biological elements like bacteria, pollens, allergens, and pet dander could also be wreaking havoc on your skin. If you tend to break out in a rash after playing with your pet or you break out in hives after eating a strawberry, you are all too familiar with how biological elements like allergens can affect your skin.

How to Safeguard Your Skin

If you know a specific environmental factor is causing your skin distress, it’s best to avoid it. Though it may not be possible to avoid all environmental skin irritants, you can take preventative measures to protect your skin. If you are cleaning your house or working with chemicals at work, make sure to wear gloves and protective clothing. It’s also recommended that you work or live in a space that maintains an ambient temperature – not too warm or too cold. You can nourish your skin from the inside out by eating foods rich in Vitamins D and E, such as fish, milk, spinach, and blueberries. And, as always, keep your skin properly moisturized using a daily skincare routine with products that utilizes natural, quality ingredients.

Love,
