Why Men Should Visit the Spa: A Centuries Old Tradition

At Botanica Day Spa, it’s not just women who come in for services, but men as well. Most people are pretty intrigued and shocked to learn that we have a large male clientele! That brought about the follow-up question of what do men go to the spa for? Therefore, we’re going to venture back and do some spa history on just how long men have been visiting the spa!

The History of Men at the Spa

Men at the spa dates back to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Back in those days, spas were indulged by not only women but men too! Spa culture has evolved throughout the centuries, starting from when Homer, a Greek writer, and philosopher, mentioned in his works that the social baths that most civilians indulged in, included men. These social baths are carbon dated as early as 500 B.C.

The Roman Emperor Agrippa was known for creating and modifying one of the first Roman spas during 25 B.C. Agrippa started this trend, and each emperor after him tried to build a more and more extravagant spa. Eventually, spas reached the caliber of having within them entertainment complexes (offering sports!), restaurants, and various types of baths. When one would attend one of these baths, they would be brought into three different rooms of different temperatures, then anointed with oils, massaged, and exfoliated.

These Roman baths were just a part of everyday life for the men and women in Ancient Rome!

Only during the mid-20th century did spas begin taking on the stereotype of being a woman’s domain, as men took on a more barber style form of skin care. There was a misconception of “real men don’t go to spas.” However, even during the 1850s, some men knew the value and worth of spas. Important men such as Edgar Allen Poe and Franklin Delano Roosevelt attended spas – New York’s Saratoga Springs to be specific. Today, spas are known to be valuable and relevant in society because they can help a person improve their fitness, healthy lifestyles, spirituality, and can provide relaxation in stressful everyday life. And these benefits are certainly not restricted to gender!

Father’s Day Spa Gift

So, you see, men have been going to spas for a long time. The best part of learning about how long men have been and should be visiting the spa, just like any women, is that it’s the perfect Father’s Day gift! Dad’s work plenty and bend over backward for their family, therefore, treat him right with a Father’s Day massage or facial. It may seem out of the ordinary, but after he returns from the spa, he’ll be extremely grateful for the relaxed and cleansed way he’ll feel!

Another wonderful treatment that men like to receive is a body scrub, to help invigorate and renew their hardworking skin! The more popular spa treatments for men at Botanica range from massage therapy (whether for relaxation or for the fitness-inclined seeking muscle tension release), facials, pedicures, and body treatments.

Let our friendly staff schedule an appointment for you today! Give us a call at 727.441.1711, or book online at your convenience for the perfect Father’s Day gift (we also have spa gift certificates for the picky Dad that can choose his own spa service instead)!

Love,
